The Witten Branch of the
Barking & Dagenham / Witten Club
Ten Years On
The spacious premises
of the Witten Angling Club were literally bursting at the seams for the
party held on 5 March 2005 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Witten
Branch of the Barking & Dagenham / Witten Club. Witten members showed
up in large numbers to celebrate the event together with their friends
and guests from Barking and Dagenham.
In honour of the internationalism, the decorations were suitably English
and German - with balloons in the colours of the Union Jack and the German
flag. Panels replete with documentation and photos gave an excellent overview
of the twinning scheme over the years.
The President of the Witten Branch, Rolf Ostermann, was awarded the honorary
title of "Colliery Foreman" and presented with a miner's pickaxe by Klaus
Lohmann, the former Mayor of Witten. Needless to say, the Steigerlied,
the German miners' anthem was soon struck up.
It was a truly unforgettable evening with acquaintances old and new, lots
of good conversation and a scrumptious meal.
